Guinea Pig Rescue, Boarding & Retirement Home

Guinea Pigs to Sponsor

Sponsoring a guinea pig can really help the Rescue in a big way.  All the guinea pigs for sponsoring are permanent residents in our Retirement Section.  Sadly there are guinea pigs here who cannot be rehomed for many reasons.  They may have health problems where they need continual care and some are too old and frail to rehome yet again.

ROCKY

Rocky came into Rescue in August 2007 because his owners were moving.  He was 4 years old and living with a sow.  The reason for keeping him here is that he is a Satin and as they are prone to osteodystrophy I never rehome that breed, the good news is that Rocky has shown no signs of this disease. He is a big gentle boar easy to handle and would almost live with any other boar he is very sweet tempered.  Up to recently he lived in a group of three boars one of which was Gus who was an elderly blind and deaf piggy and Rocky was very caring of Gus and was often seen cuddled into him.  Sadly Gus died recently but he still has his friend Jack.

JACK

Jack was born in 2004 and came into Rescue in 2007, soon after Rocky (above).  He wouldnt tolerate living with any boar I tried to pair him up with.  I wasnt sure where to place him as he was too old to neuter and we tried a very long time trying to find him a suitable friend.  For some reason I thought I would try him with Rocky and Gus as they were two very laid back pigs.  I hardly ever put three boars together as that very rarely works but things were getting desparate as Jack needed company.  Well Jack adored Rocky from the start, he tolerated Gus, but it was obvious how much he loved Rocky's company so after so long in trying to find a mate for him I decided he should stay and keep Rocky company.

LEWEY

Sadly Lewey died in September 2009.  We miss you.  Lewey was born in 2006.  He came into Rescue in 2007 with two other boars because of their owner's lack of time and funds.  They were obviously handled alot as all three were very easy to handle and loved their cuddles.  Lewey still lives with his friend Rewey.  When they initially came into Rescue Rewey had fungal nose so they were held back for rehoming until this was cleared.  Nobody offered to adopt them at that time and then masses of little lumps appeared on Lewey's chest.  He couldnt be operated on as it would have been impossible to remove all of the lumps, so it was decided that he and Rewey would remain here.

JOHN CLAUDE

Sadly John Claude died on 15th October 2009.  We miss your little face peering up at us at meal times RIP sweet boy.  John Claude came into Rescue in 2008 with his friend Phil.  He was only 15 months old but sadly he has developed diabetes so he will stay here with his friend.  They are two lovely boars easy to handle and enjoy life very much.  John Claude has lost weight and drinks alot of water which is usual with this condition.  Sadly it is quite common with guinea pigs and there is no treatment.

LOOBRUSH

Loobrush was born in 2005 and she came into Rescue on the 1st November 2007.  She was one of the 107 that I took in from one home.  She had bald patches all over her with scratch marks all over her back and was passing white droppings.  She lived in a hutch 18 inches by 12 inches all on her own as the owner said she did not like living with other sows.

She was bathed and given a good diet and within a week you could see a difference.  She now lives in the large run in my shed with over 20 other sows very contentedly and as you can see not a bald patch in sight.

NOEARS

Noears was born in 2008 and came into Rescue in May that year with a large group of other baby sows.  She had come from a home where they had too many pets.  She is a Satin, like Rocky above, and was left with her two brothers with their father who chewed all their ear flaps off.  Being a Satin she was not up for rehoming and lives in the large retirement run here.  She is very sweet natured but very cheeky and gets away with murder with the older sows she lives with.

MIDNIGHT

Midnight came into Rescue on the 2nd May 2009 with her two daughters due to a split up in the family.  Midnight has cataracts in both eyes which makes her eyes look like little pearls and it is because of this blindness that she cannot be rehomed.  She is 3 years old and a real character and lives in the large run here with all the retired sows.  As you can see her favourite pasttime is sleeping in the readigrass bowl.

DARCY

This is Darcy (Midnight's daughter)  she is 2 years old.  She has several lumps and has had to have one removed by the vet as it had become infected.  Because of these lumps and the strong possibility of her having cataracts she too will stay with her mother, sister and the rest of the gang in the large retirement run here.  She has a strong character, doesnt enjoy cuddles much but she does enjoy food and will eat around her mother sleeping in the readigrass.

BUSSEL

This is Bussel, Darcy's sister and Midnight's daughter.  She too is 2 years old.  She has developed cataracts so she too will remain here in the retirement run.  She is quite shy quite unlike her mother and sister and as you can see she likes to live in the dried feed dish.

WILD RUBY

We call her here Wild Ruby lol.  She came here on the 8th May 2009 when she was about 4 to 5 weeks old.  She was born unexpectedly from a guinea pig bought at a vey large pet store.  The owner had homed all the others in pairs and was left with Ruby.  I took her in to pair her up and put her with a mother with babies who were born on the same day as she, 10th April 2009.  Everything was fine and thought she will be homed very soon.  But as she got older she became more and more dominant and started picking on all the others.  We have tried several times to pair her up but she will not have any of it and becomes a right bully.

I decided to put her in the run with the retirement piggies thinking that, with that many she cannot take them all on and there is also a very strong neutered boar in there, Rudolph, who I hoped would teach her some manners.  Well he had his work cut out but he has shown her the error of her ways and she lives quite happily in the run, now and again he has to remind her whose boss, but in the end she settles down again.  When she is taken out of the run for cleaning she does set off again so it was decided that she will remain in the run which will mean she will always have company.

I think her behaviour may have something to do with that red hair lol.

APPLE

Apple came to us in 2006, she is now about 4 years old.  We kept her to keep with her friend Beauty as they had always been together.  Apple is one of the sweetest natured guinea pigs we have ever had.  She is now too old to rehome and she is too settled with us now.  She loves her cuddles and as you can see her food too lol.  She came into Rescue as her owner was pregnant and wouldnt be able to cope with the pets in the household.
